Diversity in Dentistry Action Group (DDAG) Release the Equality Diversity & Inclusion Report 14.05.21

The Society of British Dental Nurses welcomes this report, we have contributed to the development of the report via the stakeholder groups and our President Fiona Ellwood presented a report from our own small scale survey, the ‘Mouse in The House”. We congratulate Nishma Sharma and the Strategic Oversight Group on this much needed piece of work. – “Racism in our Society … the dental profession must be a part of the change…”

Our own research provided a reminder that this is deep rooted and is evident across the whole arena, it is not just dentists that suffer it is the whole team. It is devastating to know that individuals experience racism at interview and in training, let alone in everyday life. Our commitment statement is that:

“We need a diverse and inclusive dental nursing profession that is part of

a wider profession with the same intent. A profession where everyone

can flourish and thrive and be themselves. We need to reject bias and

discrimination and address inequalities.”

Our work has also focused on ‘belonging’, believing that you can play lip service to the agenda, you can put everything in place, but if individuals have no sense of belonging then all is wasted. The Society of British Dental Nurses has also committed to revisit policies and procedures as part of committing to the agenda. We also acknowledge the broader landscape of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Our work is not done, but simply beginning.
