COVID-19 Vaccinations

With the recent announcement from Government that vaccinations would become mandatory in England for all healthcare staff working face-to-face with patients. This will apply to all dental settings providing CQC regulated activity, although it must be noted this still needs parliamentary approval. We have received numerous calls from concerned dental nurses, student dental nurses, practice managers, employers and colleges.

These concerns appear to link with the wider concerns of the lack of dental nurses coming into the profession against the backdrop of the demand and concerns that are associated with contractual targets. It is understood that currently unvaccinated individuals will need to have their first vaccination dose by the 3rd February 2022 if they are to have received their second vaccination by April 1st 2022. Furthermore, it is suggested that exemptions will be made for those with medical exemptions.

Meanwhile guidance in the Ireland, Scotland and Wales and their position is still to be confirmed. Already we are seeing petitions emerging and an abundance of social media posts in which dental nurses are considering a change of career.

There is no doubt that the vaccines have changed outcomes for many and continue to do so as this debate continues. This is an evolving situation that will undoubtedly be discussed with some urgency over the coming weeks as we move towards February 2022. We are seeking opinions from our members and will continue to represent your voice in these debates.
