You will recall that the Society was involved in the early work of the Diversity in Dentistry Action Group and as a result presented their work on the ‘Mouse in the House’ to complement the Chair Nisha Sharma’s work on the ‘Elephant in the Room. We also provided feedback on the excellent driver diagram. We are delighted to see the work continuing and have committed to updating our findings and to continuing to encourage the advocacy and allies’ work and to work collaboratively to find a way to support bystanders who do nothing through fear of reprisal.
The team was shocked at how many dental nurses had faced discrimination and as a result of this, the Society launched its Statement of Intent.

The statement of intent is clearly visible in the infographic above and should not be dismissed as a flippant commentary on such an important matter. It can be challenging if you have never experienced such discrimination or biases, but we encourage you to become an ally and advocate for eliminating discrimination. This is not about policy writing, this is not about using a range of pictures of difference, this is a call to action to the profession and allied healthcare workser.
We are also privileged to share that our Executive Director, Fiona Ellwood, was part of the fabulous BASCD Team who recently delivered their position statement on EDI.
